The 11-year old was being bullied at school, so her mom thought a fun night with friends might make her feel better. The party has grown into something much bigger. About 150 kids and their parents have been invited.
It includes everyone from the Paxton-Buckley-Loda 6th grade class and some kids from Vineyard Church. It's for the Purple Party.
Anna York and Tyger McClure came up with the idea after they started noticing some bad things happening around their town. There's going to be a DJ, karaoke and dancing, but speakers will also be there addressing the topic of bullying.
Anna and Tyger hope people will walk away with a better understanding of how serious the problem is. Anna and Tyger say a lot of the national bullying also caught their attention, but they want to focus on their own town first.
The party is next Saturday at the Arcade Banquet Hall. They encourage everyone attending to wear purple, including clothes, jewelry, maybe even wigs!
It seems cyber-bullying is also becoming a bigger problem. 58% of kids surveyed said someone bullied them online at least once. The same percentage of kids didn't tell their parents or an adult.
The Attorney General has a website to help parents deal with the problem. For more information, click here.
