UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- Even though the Illini basketball team wrapped up for the season, construction at the State Farm Center is in high gear. It started with a lot of demolition.
Crews worked on the mechanical rooms in two parts of the building. Now, they're working on new entrances on the east and west sides. The $165 million construction project is scheduled to be done in phases and completed by 2016.
CHAMPAIGN -- Work at the State Farm Center is underway. Construction crews wasted no time beginning renovations.
Thursday afternoon, cranes and other heavy machinery surrounded the facility. Dirt was being moved and some ramps were torn down. Inside, crews are demolishing offices.
CHAMPAIGN -- Tuesday is the last regular season game for the Fighting Illini at the State Farm Center. The UI Board of Trustees is set to approve construction contracts Thursday. The plan is to get workers on the job that day.
It's a $165 million project. It will result in more seats and updated facilities. All of the work is scheduled to be completed by fall 2016.
