DECATUR -- A string of shootings has police stepping up patrols while neighbors are on edge. WCIA-3's Alex Davis talked to police to answer that question.

19-year old Marcus Smith says he doesn't hang out on the streets too often.

"It's a safe area, just a lot of nonsense going on."

Smith was surprised to hear there was a rash of five shootings Sunday. They all took place on the same side of town, just hours apart. One person was shot in the leg.

"What is this town coming to? Decatur is turning into, I don't know what it's turning into. The kids running around. It's a lot of stuff going on. I hear about it."

Police believe the shootings are related and could be due to ongoing fights between a group of people.

"When you have five shootings within such a close period of time, number one, that sends red flags up."

Police are aggressively searching the city's streets, trying to find suspects tied to these five shootings. They say the city has always been a peaceful community and these types of violent behaviors will not be tolerated.

"We're going to quickly try to put a stop to it. I can tell you that we're making every effort to do so."

They've hired more officers and increased patrols in the neighborhoods.

"This is not a stagnant case where it's just sitting. Still, there are several detectives who are working on it currently and we're hoping to gain more ground throughout the next couple of days."

So far, police arrested five men they think know something about the shootings.
