This is a resolution, so it is more of a suggestion than an actual law. But it asks that the governor stay at the Governor's Mansion any night the Legislature is in session. Many people here agree.
Richard Marting and his wife are visiting Springfield from Round Lake. They just took a tour of the Governor's Mansion.
"We have this beautiful Governor's Mansion, and the governor should be spending more time in it."
When he came into office, Governor Quinn said the mansion was going to get a good workout. But last year, we investigated and found over the course of a year, Quinn only spent forty nights in the mansion.
Marting said, "I'm originally from Iowa years ago, and that Governor's Mansion, the governor stays down there. Here, they don't seem to want to stay."
Jacksonville Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer filed the resolution.
"My goal wasn't to tie the governor's hands and say, 'you have to be here.' He should want to be here."
It says all governors should stay in the mansion while the Legislature is in.
"He needs to be here when we're in Legislative session, especially when we're trying to deal with a lot of the problems we're dealing with now."
Quinn would not sit down with us for that investigation. But in the past, he has insisted he spends his time there, even mentioning unmentionables.
"The governor, a while back, said that he keeps his underwear in the mansion. Do you believe that? I've never seen it. I've never been in the living quarters, so I couldn't tell you," said Davidsmeyer.
"I think if they're going to be the governor, they should be in the facility. They should be by the Capitol."
The Governor's Office says he does stay in Springfield during Legislative session. A spokesperson stated, in short, the governor goes wherever he has work to do.
