SPRINGFIELD -- Tuesday was the first day many ventured outside and onto the roadways after treacherous winter weather conditions. While some may seem free and clear, looks can be deceiving.

Many of the roads are like mini-minefields of packed snow and patches of ice. Snow could easily also have black ice lurking underneath.

That's why IDOT is letting drivers know they need to continue to drive with caution. It recommends drivers buckle up, allow for extra travel time and avoid distractions.

I-55 is just one of many roads which are still covered in ice and snow. Officials say, even going the speed limit in some areas may be too fast.

With strong winds and cold temperatures expected to persist the next few days, drivers may want to check winter road conditions periodically. Authorities say road salt will be more effective for treating icy roads once the temperature gets a little warmer.
