URBANA -- Books from Central Illinois are heading to state prisons because of a few small donations. UC Books to Prisoners had its annual book sale. It raised money to send books to inmates for free.
The goal is to ship 100,000 books by the end of the year. So far, the group has shipped 94,000. An increase in the number of inmat4es means there are fewer resources for education. It's also getting more expensive to ship the books.
In Illinois, only about 16 of the state's 26 prisons have libraries. Books to Prisoners started in 2004. Community members donate books.
