Scholarship honors son's memory

WHITE HEATH, Ill. (WCIA) -- Years after a woman's son died in a Piatt County train accident, she's still finding a special way to honor his memory.

Ryan Stricklin died in 2009. He was riding an atv in rural Piatt County when he saw a train coming and couldn't stop in time.

His mom set up a scholarship fund in his name to give to students at his high school. She's raising money for it in a special way.

Anne Drummond made Valentine goody bags and is selling them to anybody who wants a gift to give on Valentine's day. It's a day of love, and this is just another way she's trying to help kids like her son.

She set up a scholarship at his high school in Monticello. The money that's raised is given to a student who is like her son, Ryan.

Someone who has at least a "B" GPA, is interested in tech school or going to community college, and needs the money to pay for it.

Drummond says, "The kids really need some sort of extra hope, even if it's a little bit. I set up the guidelines so that a person of need would get this money. It's like Ryan is still giving, he was a very giving boy."

One person from Monticello High School is chosen each year. The scholarship is at least $350 or more, depending on how much money she's able to raise.

If you want to buy a gift bag or donate to the scholarship fund, you can send mail to her at this address.
