ASHMORE -- A Coles County village may have a new place to get together in case of an emergency. The Charleston School Board plans to talk about joining an agreement with the community of Ashmore.

That way, people in the village could go to the grade school's grounds if they have to evacuate from their homes. The school itself wouldn't be a shelter, but they could use the parking lot, green space and playground areas.

The plan comes after strong storms ripped through the village in January. Straight line winds knocked down 69 electric poles in the area.

If it's approved, emergency leaders could put trailers, porta-potties or tents on school grounds.
