This would be a first for the county. Before, Champaign always calls in the search and rescue teams in Vermilion or McLean County. Deputies say establishing one locally would help in missing people situations.
"If we already have that within our county, we cut that response time down," said Lt. Shane Cook. "We've learned that first three hours with a missing person is very valuable."
The agencies are also looking for help from the community. They need volunteers willing to donate both time and resources. Officials say they will train you. If you're interested - there's a meeting at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 11. It will be held at 400 S. Art Bartell Road, Urbana.
