Sky lanterns now illegal in Illinois

LOVINGTON -- They're called Sky Lanterns or Aerial Luminaries. Starting immediately, they're no longer allowed in Illinois. They're already banned in Champaign. But now, the Illinois Fire Marshal has added it to the Prohibited Consumer Fireworks List.

The lanterns use a candle to float. The candle is supposed to burn out before falling to the ground, but officials say it can easily start a fire. The State Fire Marshal says the lanterns can also cause problems for planes and be a distraction for drivers on the road.
