CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- When this weather hits, it's not all about the snow. Ice is a major issue. Without salt to melt it, every step is dangerous.
Salt trucks are covering the roads they can. Champaign has 1,000 tons of salt ready and has ordered 2,400 tons. Vermilion County has spent $80,000 on salt and has 600 tons coming in. Monticello has 100 tons of salt left and is ordering more.
Charleston, however, is running low. For reasons city leaders say are out of their control, they didn't get their last two shipments. Public works is trying to mix salt and sand to spread out their supply.
CENTRAL ILLINOIS -- Lots of events are canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday, but people are still trying to get home from work. Most of Central Illinois is in red on the state weather map.
It means roadways are completely covered in snow and ice. I-72 is extremely dangerous. Officials want you to stay off of it. Parts of I-74 and I-57, also snow-covered.
