UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- Many lawmakers have the UI on their minds. They want to see a new medical school on campus. That's why Senator Chapin Rose (R) sent a letter to the university president. Five other Champaign County lawmakers also signed it.

The UI has recently started talking with Carle about opening a new medical school on campus. Even though the idea is still in the early stages, Rose says he supports it. He says the college would add economic, academic and health benefits to the area.

Rose also mentioned there's a nationwide doctor shortage. To fill that need, students need to go somewhere to earn their MD's. That could be right here at UI.

Students here can already take medical classes through a program with UIC, but Rose says there are benefits to having a full college here including the opportunity for spinoff businesses with research and engineering.
