CHAMPAIGN -- The Orpheum Children's Museum is looking for a few hard-working volunteers. They're taking action to clean the place and take care of much-needed repairs. It's not just spring cleaning.

If there's anything they think can be better, they're trying to make that happen. They closed Monday to start work. Museum employees and volunteers will be on a tight scheduled until they reopen Friday.

Sanding, painting and vacuuming are just a few things which go into maintaining an aging building.

"I'll be here every day and all night."

Stephen Haas has a few different jobs, but he brought along a few volunteers to sweat it out.

"My son, Ian. He's six. He's back there helping and my mom is here as well. My daughter and my wife will be here at night too."

Executive Director Rene Dunn says they can use any extra help they can get.

"We have exhibits that need to be repainted. We have some that need to be repaired. You know, kids touch toys all day long. They need to be sanitized. They need to be clean."

She says getting people comes first, but being a non-profit, she hopes the community can help them get the tools they need.

"We also put out a call for items that need to be donated like painter's tape, drop cloths, sandpaper. You know, anything that will help us get the work done without spending too much money. We are a not-for-profit organization, so expenses are always at the forefront of our minds."

So is finishing on time. There's a weekend full of events planned starting the day after they expect to finish.

"We're hoping, when our museum visitors return, they see a visible difference in the amount of work that we've done."

Haas says he'll be working seven hours a day until everything looks the way they want it and that his volunteers are looking forward to seeing the finished project.

"The kids were excited about coming to help. They like playing here. It's also great to give back and this is a great part of the community, so it's a chance to help make it a better part."

Update: 5:37 am, 2/15/16, Monday

CHAMPAIGN -- The Orpheum Children's Science Museum is closed for the week for maintenance. The museum is getting a deep-cleaning, plus doing some routine maintenance.

Leaders say they can't do it alone. They're asking volunteers to come help get the job done. They say this is a great opportunity to help make it a safe and clean environment for the kids.

Each day of the week focuses on a different task; Monday is "fix" day; Tuesday volunteers will prep the museum for painting, which happens Wednesday; Thursday is for organizing; Friday's focus is on cleaning up and getting ready for the weekend.

Volunteer shifts are available from 10 am - 2 pm and 5 pm - 8 pm.
