State agency protects customers from scams

ILLINOIS -- One state agency is fighting back against potential scammers targeting illegal immigrants. The Secretary of State's office was never breached, but staff say they have heard from many sources about businesses wanting to take advantage of illegal immigrants wishing to get licenses.

Appointments are required for the a temporary visitors driver's licenses. They are designed for immigrants living in the United States illegally. Some businesses have promised to speed up the process for a fee and are using automated dialing machines which are tying up the phone system.

It caused the Secretary of State's office to act. The licenses cost $30. They are to be used only for driving. More than 100,000 applicants have scheduled appointments since the program began. About 53,000 Illinois immigrants living in the United States illegally have received temporary driver's licenses.
