ILLINOIS -- The state is getting high marks when it comes to being green. Illinois is number one in the country for sustainable building design. The U.S. Green Building Council says the state has more than 29-million square feet of LEED certified green buildings.

One of those exhibiting "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" is the Workforce Careers Center at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield. It opened in 2012 and is made of recycled construction waste and stone.

Lincoln Hall at UIUC is also LEED certified. Rounding out the top five states are Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, New York and California.
