URBANA -- UI students started a new chapter Sunday, but something was missing. Commencement tradition is to take pictures in front of the Alma Mater. It's still being restored.

Instead, students posed in front of replicas. Students and alum say it made the experience bittersweet.

"I was hoping that she would be able to make it back, but I'm really excited that we'll at least have something to remember this time. It's really just a really interesting time to graduate and say we were the only graduating classes here without Alma," graduate Laura Wilson said.

The Alma Mater should be finished by graduation of next year.
