Students pick politics over prom

ST. JOSEPH, Ill. (WCIA) -- The high school constitution team is missing prom for a chance to speak on Capitol Hill.

They're heading to D.C. for the national finals in a competition called We the People. It puts students through the ringer of a mock congressional hearing. The top ten teams advance to the final round on Capitol Hill.

The competition is April 27 - May 1. Saint Joseph-Ogden's prom is April 28. Students on the team say skipping prom is an easy choice because this opportunity is so unique. Their teacher says he's proud of their dedication and how they've grown as researchers, analytical thinkers and confident presenters.

They placed second in the state We the People competition in December and have been reviewing legal cases for months. Last year, they placed 41st out of 56 teams in the national contest. This year they hope to do even better.
