He challenged the school to read one million minutes. In exchange, he promised to shave his head. He followed through during an assembly, Monday.
Valencic says he got the idea from a Champaign teacher. The students actually surpassed the goal by more than 200,000 minutes. But they didn't do it alone.
"We started in September and by November we had barely crossed 100,000 minutes," Valencic said. "I was worried we weren't going to make it. But then more families started logging their minutes and members of the community started sending in their minutes as well. So we got a lot of great support from that."
Valencic says before Monday, he hadn't cut his hair since before last summer. He plans to stay bald until the end of the school year.
