SPRINGFIELD -- Lawmakers are spreading the gift of reading to students. Public schools got a hefty donation Thursday; hundreds of books on all sorts of subjects, for readers of all ages.

Superintendent Jennifer Gill says these books are a great gift for the students. It's all thanks to donors and Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon.

Simon's office collected the books throughout the Illinois State Fair. A reading specialist for the district will pick out the books and distribute them to students. The books are new or gently used.

The students will be able to take them home. Simon's office will also collect donated books for Du Quoin schools at the Du Quoin State Fair, which opens Friday.
