UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- Some students at UI are back on campus early to give back. It's what they call "Alternative Winter Break (AWB)."

The Illini Hillel sponsors the program. Students are traveling throughout Central Illinois to help whomever they can. They've been busy.

They just started the AWB Monday and have already helped dozens of people. Monday, they worked with organizations like Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, Grace Community Church and Clark-Lindsey Retirement Village.

Tuesday, they were building a home for Habitat for Humanity and will do the same thing Wednesday. Students say it's the least they can do for the towns surrounding the place they call home.

The students are also helping victims of the recent tornadoes. Monday, they picked up debris from a woman's home just outside Gifford. Thursday, they head to Washington to help with disaster relief there.
