CHAMPAIGN -- An area high school teacher fighting cancer got some unexpected support from her students. Students at Central High School gave their English teacher a check Thursday. They're Taking Action to help with her medical expenses. WCIA-3's Amanda Porterfield has more.

They've been raising money for months and Diane Salfelder had no idea. She says when she got the big check for $1,500, she was overwhelmed.

Everyone gathered in the school's gym for the presentation. All were wearing pink t-shirts with "CHS Wear Pink for Miss Sal."

Miss Sal was diagnosed with breast cancer and is going through chemo. She says she had to tell her students what was wrong because she was losing her hair.

She says she's happy letting them know made them more aware. The love people showed Miss Sal is what she shows them.

Salfelder says, since she started chemo, she's only missed one day of school because being around students brightens her day. She says all the money will pay for medical deductibles she encounters monthly.
