The Jon White case is back in the news. He taught at Thomas Paine Elementary School. Now, he's doing time for sexually-abusing students.
Before coming to Urbana, he taught in Normal. He resigned there after parents complained he was inappropriate with students. The school also knew he had pornography on his computer, and never notified Urbana school leaders.
White started teaching at Thomas Paine in 2005. That's where he sexually abused eight little girls. Their parents filed a lawsuit against the Normal School District in 2008. That was thrown out, and since then, the case made its way to the Illinois Supreme Court.
Thursday, it ruled in favor of the victims, saying the district had a responsibility to protect all students, not just its own. This means the lawsuit will be tried again in court.
The Normal School District issued a statement saying it respects the court but is disappointed in its decision. Officials will review it and decide how to proceed.
