DANVILLE -- She's a former teacher, a businesswoman and she volunteers with dozens of groups. This woman has been Taking Action and giving back for decades.

Sybil Mervis has been volunteering since she was a kid. She says it all started when she was a Brownie Scout in the 1940's.

She volunteers with hospitalized vets. Now, years later, Mervis has been involved with dozens of groups, from helping immunize hundreds of kids to serving on the public library's board.

Mervis is being award the Ambucs First Citizens Award, an honor given to those who spend their lives bettering the community. It's something she says was always a "no-brainer."

Mervis' family also has a foundation which gives scholarships to community college students. She says that's one of her favorites.

Philanthropy runs in the family. A few years back, Mervis' husband was given the award as well.
