CHAMPAIGN -- As people adjust to driving in the snow and ice, officials have a few tips to stay safe. Leave early, pay attention to weather patterns and double-up on following distance.

If you do get into an accident, turn on your flashers right away and keep an emergency kit in your car including blankets, a shovel and kitty litter to help you get out if you get stuck.

They're all things you don't want to learn too late. Another obvious one, wherever you're headed, keep a good charge on your cell phone.
