The car was traveling eastbound on I-74 near milepost 190. The driver, Ralph Hein of Champaign, tried to pass another vehicle on the left shoulder. He lost control, drove into the median and overturned. The car came to rest on its roof in the center of the westbound traffic lanes.
Hein was extricated and taken to Carle Hospital with serious injuries. His passenger, Robert Cook, was treated for minor injuries and later released.
Hein was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Operation of Uninsured Vehicle, Improper Lane Usage, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and Failure to Wear Seatbelt.
