It'll open up more than 200 acres of land. Leaders are confident it will turn the U of I into a premier research community.
The Research Park currently takes up about 40 acres. It has 90 companies and employs about 1300 people.
The road extension lays the ground work for more companies to come in to the area.
It's a project that's nine years in the making.
"There are a lot of players that needed to come together and it took some patience, but eventually now we'll see roads constructed beginning in June," Research Park director Laura Frerichs said. "We're optimistic about the growth that will come because of that initial infrastructure."
The project is being funded by state and federal dollars. It'll cost about $6 million. That's about 1 million less than what was expected. The Research Park will keep that extra money and use it for other improvements.
