UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- New faculty members will join the UI ranks. Leaders plan to bring 500 new teachers to the university over the next five-to-seven years. They want to have about 2,000 faculty members total.

New staff wouldn't be hired all at once. School leaders plan to replace faculty members who retire or leave first, then add more. They say they're happy for the opportunity to hire new people.

The chancellor made the announcement at a town hall meeting this week. New hires will be added to various departments around campus.
