UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- The future of virtual reality is being shaped in Urbana-Champaign. Engineers from the UI are playing a major role in building the industry.

Facebook is jumping into that world too. It's agreed to buy Oculus VR, the maker of a virtual reality headset. The deal is said to be worth $2 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, says virtual reality could be the next big computing platform. UI scientist Steve Lavalle is currently on loan to Oculus serving as principal scientist on the Rift headset.
