UI no longer on censure list

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) -- The UI has been removed from the American Association of University Professors censure list.

It was added to the list in 2015, after the organization decided the UI violated "basic tenets of academic freedom" after it revoked a job offer for Steven Salaita. It was following his controversial Twitter posts about the war in Gaza.

After Salaita sued the UI in federal court, he won a settlement of $600,000, plus legal costs making the total cost of his non-career at UI $875,000.

The AAUP says the university made policy changes addressing the issues. In the year after the incident, students protested and academic leaders boycotted the university.

Salaita planned to join the American Indian Studies Department, but the university didn't approve his contract after he posted the controversial messages on social media about conflict in the Middle East.
