URBANA -- Service dogs spend their lives helping people in need, and University of Illinois veterinarians are making sure they get some help in the dental department. The UI is offering free oral exams for service dogs.

It's part of a nationwide effort started by the American Veterinary Dental College. Vets check for things like periodontal disease, broken teeth, or anything that may be bothering the dog.

"It's something the owners can't see on the outside," said Dr. Sanda Manfra Maretta with UI. "A lot of people don't think to do that and without an oral exam, you don't know something is going on."

The UI will do these free exams through June. To register your service dog click here
