UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- The UI is gaining national recognition for its new RailTEC Research Center. Some of its discoveries could help your next train ride go a little smoother. RailTEC got a special visit from the U.S. Department of Transportation Monday.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has a strong interest in railway technology and safety. Leaders want to know what's going on at the new research facility, so RailTEC invited FRA administrator Joseph Szabo to see the research going on there.

Szabo says he's excited about the lab and what it can do for rail safety, reliability and transportation efficiency. The new research lab is unique to North America for conducting experiments to improve the design and performance of railroad track. RailTEC faculty and researchers teach more than twelve courses in rail engineering and transportation.
