There's a fear the Avenue of Flags could be bare come Memorial Day. But, an area veterans group is working to keep that from happening.
American Legion Post 32, out of Springfield, is trying to raise funds to purchase new poles for the cemetery. They're looking to raise enough to replace all 202 flagpoles, which could be as much as $26,000. Ken Oglesby, an Army veteran and owner of Flag World, in Springfield, says he's doing all he can to help.
"The veterans are the ones that paid the ultimate price keeping us free, so I think it's pretty important to all veterans and all Americans, and the image of the flag is a pretty strong image. So, when you see 200 out there lining the streets, that's pretty impressive."
The volunteers say they'll choose poles which can weather storms and wind. The poles are meant to fly veterans' burial casket flags donated to the cemetery by families of veterans. As you can image, those flags are long and wide and need a lot of support, especially in severe weather.
