Watchdog group keeping eye on IDOC

ILLINOIS (WCIA) -- State prisons haven't done enough to correct treatment of prisoners with mental illnesses. That's what the Uptown People's Law Center claims.

The watchdog group settled a case a year ago requiring the Department of Corrections to give specialized healthcare to 11,000 mentally ill inmates.

It would have also created facilities and hired staff to treat them.

The group says it's visited prisons and interviewed inmates and leaders don't believe the state has kept its word.
