Sangamon County engineers say they've been working non-stop this week to make sure area drivers are safe, but all that extra time on the road, quickly adds up on their time cards. In this strong winter, county workers have been putting in more hours. It's something engineers say is necessary, even if it comes at a cost.
They're close to maxing out their budget. Oftentimes they're forced to retrace their routes over and over because high winds continue to push snow onto exposed roadways, especially on rural routes.
The crew in Sangamon County has been swamped. It's running twenty plows across some 250,000 miles.
In Champaign County, the highway department covers 190 miles with eleven plows. The department has already surpassed its $50,000 overtime budget for the year.
Macon County hasn't maxed out its yet. It's used 40% of its $75,000, operating twelve plows on 234 miles of county highway.
