DECATUR -- A 70-year old woman is dead and neighbors are in disbelief. It happened about 7 am, Wednesday, near Sattley and Steele Court. Investigators say the victim was hit by a garbage truck and run over. WCIA-3's Anthony Antoine spoke with neighbors.
People say the woman was liked by everyone and she will be missed.
"She always walked everywhere. The nicest lady you can ever meet."
But, one woman's early morning walk was cut tragically short. She was run over by a garbage truck and died from her injuries.
"Really going to miss her. I've been seeing her for the last four years just walking."
Marc Doty lived next door to the victim. He says things won't be the same.
"Every time I seen her, she was always smiling."
The streets are marked where she took her last breath. As word spreads inside the small community, neighbors knock on her door to see for themselves.
"Every morning she would wake up and she would leave the house at about 5 - 5:30. She would go uptown and meet a friend. Then, after she met the friend, she would come back at 5 - 5:30 that evening. That's all she did."
"We'll miss her, seeing her walking all the time because we never had to set our clocks. We always knew what time it was whenever she left and when she came back home."
But this time, she's not coming back home. Instead, there's only an image left that neighbors can't forget.
"I saw the fire trucks and stuff coming. I looked out the window and I saw her body laying there. I'm like, 'wow.' It just brought tears to my eyes."
Officials at Waste Management did not want to comment on the accident.
