CHAMPAIGN -- It was a big year for women in the military and Thursday dozens got together to celebrate. A panel of lieutenants, captains and cadets spoke at UI campus.

They shared their experiences from the front lines. This year women were allowed to serve in direct combat.

It was a huge step, but these women are fighting for more. They spoke to students about the struggles they still face.

"For us to just be able to come here and talk about our experiences and show other women like, 'hey you can do this too. You aren't limited.' It's just something that we can mentor other people to pursue their goals," Captain Janice Blane said.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of women allowed in ROTC programs to become officers.
