No foul play suspected in inmate death

DECATUR-- A man who was jailed on robbery charges is dead after being found unresponsive in his cell. Macon County Jail staff found Michael Banks, 59, around 4:30 AM on Sunday morning during rounds.

Banks was taken to St. Mary's Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. He was placed on life support. A doctor later declared him brain dead. Doctors say there was no sign of traumatic injury or violence.

An autopsy found that Banks died from a hemorrhagic stroke. The coroner also found that Banks had several pre-existing and long-term conditions that contributed to his death.

Banks was being held in the jail on $150,000 bond. He was accused of robbing an elderly woman. Banks had been in arraigned in court on Friday.
