CHAMPAIGN -- A woman's old refrigerator is now a new milestone for Ameren. Margaret Armstrong had her refrigerator recycled by Ameren as part of its Act on Energy recycling program.

The appliance was the 40,000th the company has accepted. Recycling refrigerators and freezers has kept more than 10,000 tons of metal and other waste from ending up in landfills.

Ameren also says switching out older appliances with newer, more energy efficient ones has saved enough energy to power 4,000 homes for a year. If you'd like to recycle your old refrigerator or freezer Ameren will give you $50.
