A Historic Week: GCMS football preps for first trip to state

Falcons will play Maroa-Forsyth in the Class 2A championship game Friday

GIBSON CITY (WCIA) -- Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley football coach Mike Allen has told his family for nearly 20 years that he won't be home for Thanksgiving. The longtime Falcons coach has always planned on playing for a state championship the day after Thanksgiving. This year he finally gets that chance.

GCMS (13-0) will face Maroa-Forsyth (12-1) in the Class 2A state title game Friday at 1 p.m. in DeKalb. The Trojans have plenty of experience on the state's biggest stage, appearing in the championship game two out of the last three years. The Falcons are making their first appearance.

"I think it's to your advantage to have been there before but our kids had never played in a semifinal, this group. To that point, this group is very competitive and are going to handle like it's another game. That's what we're trying to do," Allen said.

"I think it's great that we're playing, first time in school history," GCMS junior lineman Hayden Workman said. "For this community, everyone is loving it and I think it'll be a great game."

"It's pretty amazing," GCMS defensive lineman Josh Bleich said. "We've come pretty close but this year we get the team to set the standard."

"We all expected it at the beginning but it's just amazing that it's here and we're all ready," GCMS junior running back Jared Trantina added.
