URBANA, Ill. - They've been playing softball in Monticello for more than three decades, and they've now gone further than ever before. The Sages will play Rock Island Alleman in the state semifinals on Friday.

"You know it's been a dream of mine," head coach Courtney Hoffman said. "It's been a dream of the girls and I can't even explain it. It's great."

But their latest win didn't come without some drama. Monticello was down to its last out, down by one run, when pitcher Chrissy Gadbury sent the game-winning two-run homerun over the left-center field wall.

"I feel like we just need to jump on them a lot sooner," catcher Allie Hislope said. "We can't leave runners on base like that. Just keep hitting the ball and do what we do."

The team has reached new heights for the programs and they're not done yet.

"From here on out, we've made it this far," junior Layne Buzan said. "We're not going to give up. We're going to go all the way to the end."

Monticello will face Rock Island (Alleman) in the state semifinals Friday at 3:00 pm at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria.
