Less than two weeks after the St. Thomas More girls won the state title at Redbird Arena in Normal, the boys are headed to Redbird with a trip to state on the line. St. Thomas More will face Heyworth in the Class 1A Supersectional Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
"It has been wonderful," senior Mike Plecki said. "Everyone is so psyched up about everything. The girls did amazing, and we are just trying to follow in their footsteps."
But they're also trying to write their own story. An injection of freshman talent has helped spark the Sabers to their first ever sectional title, but it is still a senior-driven team. Plecki scored 29 points in the sectional championship win over St. Anne, and another senior Keaton Davis iced the game with two late free throws.
"We're led by our seniors, and this is what they have been building toward," said head coach Matt Kelley. "Our young guys have really stepped up. Sometimes it can be a problem, but with this group it has not. They have led the way - led by example - and our younger guys have been more than willing to learn from them. It has been a good mix."
This team has already reached new heights in reaching it's first ever elite eight. One more win Tuesday night would give them 23 for the year - tying for the second most in school history. They don't expect to be intimidated by the bright lights and big stage of Redbird Arena.
"It has been so fun," Plecki said. "We are just enjoying it. We are going to continue to work hard and play hard and see how far we can go - see if we can get a state trophy."
