STATE CHAMPS: GCMS wins 2A title

Falcons take down Maroa-Forsyth 38-32 on late score for program's first title

DEKALB (WCIA) -- Down two with a little more than a minute to play, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley was driving with a chance to win when Bryce Barnes made the catch of his life. The junior tight end caught a 23-yard pass in the back of the end zone from Nathan Garard, flying through the air over multiple defenders, cementing his place in school history. The go-ahead score proved to be the game winner, as GCMS beat Maroa-Forsyth 38-32 in the Class 2A state championship game.

"The first thought is 'We won, right?'" GCMS senior Luke Freehill said. "Then second thought is,  'Whoa, wait, we did!' Then third thought is 'GO!' Just go."

"It's something special we can hold high and realize that these kids worked hard," GCMS head coach Mike Allen said. "They did it the right way and it's something to be proud of and we're going to celebrate and enjoy it."

The Falcons (14-0) capped a perfect season with the win. The Trojans finished the year 12-2 and a runner-up trophy.

"Today I thought we battled for four quarters, really proud of my kids, really proud of my senior class," Maroa-Forsyth head coach Josh Jostes said.
