The state champion STM Sabers visit the WCIA studio

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- Fresh off their 2A volleyball state championship, the St. Thomas More Sabers stopped by the WCIA studio to talk with our own Craig Choate.

Craig:
"Coach we'll start with you. You had been to the state finals before with Centennial, how much did that help you prepare the girls this time?"

STAN BERGMAN:
"I think it's more the nerves and the anxious behavior that you have before you go to a place that's new, a state level competition, you kind of put it up on a pedestal like it's the best thing that you could do. Which obviously it is. I didn't go into it anxious, it was kind of like let's keep our cool about about how we're handling this and move forward."

Craig:
"Moving on to you Brianna, when did you feel like this team could win the state championship?"

BRIANNA HOPPER:
"Since our freshman year honestly we had talked about how we had such a special group and then continuing as more classes came in we noticed that we had this talent and once we learned to play together and had that friendship on the court too I think last year then coming in to this year we really saw the potential we had to go to state."

Craig:
"What's one moment that you're going to remember from this run?"

HOPPER:
"I think forming that maturity over this past year and then having that show through the last game and ending my volleyball career on that last point was something that I'm always going to remember."

Craig:
"Another person ending their volleyball career on that point is you, you're headed off to Auburn next year. How much does this mean to you? You've kind of done everything except for this and now you've done this. You feel like this kind of puts a cherry on top of your career?"

MICA ALLISON:
"For sure. Like Brianna said, we've kind of known that we wanted to do this for a while now and this groups has stayed together for our entire high school careers so finishing with a state championship is the best way to go out, like I keep saying, and for sure the cherry on top."

Craig:
"Finally, when did you feel like this team could win the state championship?"

ALLISON:
"At the beginning of postseason we said we're going to go 7-0 from here and it was just one at a time and we kept going from there and we did it."
