Tuscola keeping it loose before title game

Warriors play wiffle ball game in the gym before playoff games

TUSCOLA (WCIA) -- Former Tuscola football state champion coach Stan Wienke started a tradition years ago that's still an important part of the Warriors' pregame today: wiffle ball. The team traditionally plays a game in the school gym the morning of a playoff game to help get loose.

"It's been a tradition for years and we're just keeping it going," Tuscola junior quarterback Luke Sluder said. "It's kind of a fun thing that we all enjoy ourselves and have fun."

"Kinda get yourself out of bed early, get going," Tuscola senior receiver Dalton Hoel said. "It's to spend your time with your teammates and obviously you want to come out and win cause if the lineman end up winning, you'll hear about it up until the game."

The Warriors played the game a day early on Wednesday morning, they'll leave for DeKalb on Thursday. Staying loose hasn't been a problem for this Warriors team. Tuscola has won by an average of 32 points per game this postseason. Its seven-point win over Athens last week in the semifinals was the closest game yet.

"You know I really like our focus and I like how we're pretty loose about this," Tuscola head coach Andy Romine said. "This has been a focused group all year and I don't think this is going to be the group that walks out there and is awestruck by the stage. They've wanted this for a long time."

Tuscola (13-0) plays Lena-Winslow (13-0) for the Class 1A state championship Friday morning at 10 a.m. at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.
