ATHENS, Ga. (UI Release) - Fighting Illini seniors Dennis Nevolo and Roy Kalmanovich ended their collegiate careers at the NCAA Championships Friday at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Nevolo fell in the round of 16 in singles, while he and Kalmanovich droppedtheir Sweet 16 doubles match later that evening.
"It was a disappointing end for two great players," head coach Brad Dancer said. "I'm proud of both guys for all of their team and individual accomplishments. They have represented Illinois with tremendous class and spirit during their time here."
Seventh-seeded Nevolo suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to No. 9 Blaz Rola of Ohio State in the NCAA Singles Championships after reaching the round of 16 for the second straight season to secure his second career All-America accolade. The Gurnee, Ill., native also teamed up with Kalmanovich on the doubles courts, where the No. 21 Illini tandem fell to top-seeded Buckeye duo Rola and Chase Buchanan, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1, in Sweet 16 action.
Nevolo finishes his career at Illinois tied for sixth in career singles (116) and combined (211) wins and ranked ninth in doubles victories (95). His career-best 32-10 mark in singles play this season is good for 10th on the Illini single-season wins list. Nevolo is the second Illini in program history to earn All-Big Ten recognition in each of his four seasons and is the first two-time All-American since Ryan Rowe (2006, 2007) and Kevin Anderson (2005, 2006, 2007).
Kalmanovich secured a career-high 15 doubles victories throughout the 2011-12 campaign and went 25-15 in singles action, marking the second time the Framingham, Mass., native has reached the 25-win mark in his career.
