URBANA (WCIA) -- Illinois football coach Lovie Smith is taking a page out of his NFL playbook. The longtime NFL coach would wheel around training camp on his bike. The two-wheel ride is back on the Illinois campus this summer. Smith is using the same bike he's had for years to get from his office at Memorial Stadium to the Campus Rec fields in Urbana, where the team is practicing. While Smih and offensive line coach Luke Butkus ride, the team takes school buses.
"Luke and I can probably both use a little bit of extra exercise," Smith said. "That is probably the story right there. I have traditionally ridden a bike for 17 of the last 19 training camps, I try to ride a bike to practice. It is good to just get a little break. Perfect little drive, perfect distance. You don't want it to be too far away or we would be getting on the bus."
