Brown: "It's been a lot of ups and downs."

Former Illini Dee Brown ready to get back into coaching

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- A lot has changed since Dee Brown suited up for the Illini. Illinois is now on their third head coach in the last decade. Recently, Brown himself was a part of the coaching staff. WCIA 3's Craig Choate caught up with Brown at the Inaugural Hall of Fame gala.

BROWN:
"My goal was to win, my goal was to leave a legacy, my goal was to get a degree from the University of Illinois so for this to come into stone, I'm just very grateful."

Craig:
"A lot of changes with the Illini basketball team this past year, what's your outlook on where this program is headed?"

BROWN:
"I'm excited. I met Coach Underwood. I tell people I wish my first four seasons I'm 109-27, he's a winner. Love his energy and he has my support. I just want our program to become great again and I think Josh did a great job of finding the right fit."

Craig:
"Not long ago, you were a part of that program. What's this last year or so been like for you?"

BROWN:
"It's been a lot of ups and downs but at the end of the day I'm blessed to just wake up every day and me and my family is doing well and I know good things will happen for me. I know coaching is my calling so for me to just get back on the right path and get back to my grind, it's been great for me."

Craig:
"You mentioned coaching is your calling. You're doing a little bit of coaching now. Give the fans and people back in Champaign an update on what you're up to."

BROWN:
"I just got back from China a month ago. Took a USA select team over there where we went 8-2, won a championship. It was a great experience for a lot of guys. I took Michael Thorne Jr. with me. Crandall Head, former Illini. Took a tour over there and coached for a month and I also got some involvement with MeanStreets here, 15U. So just getting some experience, getting around the game, getting to know the players. But basketball is me, I'm a basketball guy."

Craig:
"You trying to get back into the college game?"

BROWN:
"Definitely, I think college is where I want to be. I think every guy that I ask that's on the college, they tell you they want to be pros and I was a pro for nine years. Played at the highest level in D1, so I think the college game is for me."
