Cvijanovic: "This is so much bigger than me"

Former Illini football player hopes to be advocate for player rights, safety

CHICAGO (WCIA) -- More than two years after former Illinois football player Simon Cvijanovic started tweeting on Mother's Day 2015, his voice and story are still being heard.

Cvijanovic received a $250,000 payment from the University of Illinois this week for medical expenses from injuries he suffered while playing for the Illini.  The settlement is the first of its kind and Cvijianovic hopes it opens the door for other college athletes to get paid as well.

"I recognize that this is so much bigger than me," Cvijanovic said alongside his lawyers in a Chicago high rise Thursday morning.  "This problem is still a problem nationwide, one that needs to be adjusted and I'm happy that people are now paying attention to those issues on a much higher level."
