EIU beats Illinois in scrimmage for hurricane relief

Five players score in double-figures for Panthers in front of sold out crowd

CHARLESTON (WCIA) -- The Eastern Illinois men's basketball team beat Illinois 80-67 in a hurricane relief exhibition game in front of a sold out crowd at Lantz Arena Friday night. All of the proceeds from the event will go to the American Red Cross to benefit victims from the recent hurricanes this fall.

EIU took control in the second half and led by as many as 15 points. Muusa Dama had 14 points, while Jujuan Starks and Terrell Lewis added 13 each. Five Panther players scored in double-figures.

"It's a tremendously generous thing to do," Eastern Illinois head coach Jay Spoonhour said about Illinois coming to Charleston. "Nobody does what Brad Underwood did today. Nobody does it. We been here for 100 years. First time it's been more than three people in this room. It's an unbelievable generous thing.  Hopefully it helped them, I know it helped us."

Illinois had four players in double figures led by Kipper Nichols with 16 points.  Mark Smith had 15 but Illinois head coach Brad Underwood was most displeased with his team's lack of hustle.

"Biggest thing I am probably the most upset with," Underwood said. "I take a lot of pride in our team playing hard, we got totally totally out played, out hustled, we never got out on the floor for a loose ball. We played pretty."
