Freshman QB, Cam Thomas, ready if called upon

URBANA (WCIA) -- Chayce Crouch is the clear starting quarterback for the Illini. But they only have three QBs on scholarship, meaning if Crouch were to get hurt, it's either Jeff George Jr. or true freshman Cam Thomas.

ANNICE MCEWAN:
"How's it been, just in general, with the workouts and talking with coaches and things like that?"

CAM THOMAS:
"Workouts have been very difficult but something I think the team needs. As far as getting used to college and getting into the flow of everything, I think everybody had a quick adjustment. It was really easy for everybody to get used to it. And I know my class is so close that I'm homesick but not really homesick. It feels like brothers already. So, that helped a lot."

ANNICE:
"Is there any chance you redshirt this season or is it pretty much off the table at this point?"

THOMAS:
"Right now, it's looking like I'm not going to redshirt. Hopefully by the season I'll be close to a starting job or somewhere where I could get quality playing time."

ANNICE:
"Where do you see yourself fitting into this with Crouch and George?"

THOMAS:
"I really don't get too caught up into that. Chayce and Jeff, those are my boys. We go into quarterback meetings and everybody is trying to learn. You're really in competition with yourself. So, it's not really me versus them, or them versus me. It's more of each other, trying to lift each other up to get to the highest of everybody's potential."

ANNICE:
"Have they talked to you a little bit about the position and what to expect at this level, and things like that?"

THOMAS:
"Of course. Coach McGee has talked to me during recruiting and while I'm here going over being a leader and having my image be something for the team to look up to."

ANNICE:
"Part of your freshmen class is Ricky (Smalling), obviously, and some other receivers. Are you looking forward to, in the future, to connect with them on the field?"

THOMAS:
"Oh, yeah. I can't wait to throw to everybody. I'm excited to see everybody play, everybody as their own respective thing that they do really well. and I think it's going to help compliment everybody's game."
